In late February 2022, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine caused havoc throughout the geopolitical landscape and resulted in a humanitarian crisis within the country.
The failure of Russia’s “plan A” — a deeply miscalculated lightning strike in Ukraine by Russian forces designed to surround major cities in Ukraine and topple down its government — turned out to be an unmitigated and poorly performed military disaster.
In this seminar, experts discuss the history and the current state of the crisis between Russia and Ukraine, the precedence that would be set for countries like North Korea and Iran for violation of agreements, and the role of the United Nations in the growing catastrophe. The panel features former California congresswoman and Presidential Scholar-in-Residence at the USC Price School of Public Policy Jane Harman, and former director for Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Russia on the White House’s National Security Council Alexander Vindman. The discussion is moderated by Mike Murphy, USC Center for the Political Future co-director and NBC political analyst.

Jane Harman is the presidential scholar-in-residence at USC Price School of Public Policy. In her distinguished career, Harman served nine terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, participated in hundreds of diplomatic missions, and served on nearly a dozen governmental and non-governmental advisory boards. In her role at USC, Harman engages with students and faculty, host salon-style events and advise university leaders.
Harman’s career is one of distinction and bipartisan leadership. Harman served on all major U.S. House security committees including Armed Services, Intelligence, and Homeland Security. She was ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee after 9/11, and Chief Counsel to the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Constitutional Rights. Routinely, she participated in classified “Gang of Eight” briefings reserved for senior Congressional intelligence committee members and bipartisan Congressional leadership. Throughout her career, she has worked diligently across the aisle to build coalitions to benefit all Americans.
